The pediatric polytrauma patient.

چکیده

Trauma is 1 of the principal public health problems in the United States, and injuries in children cause more death and disability than all other causes combined. Multiple injury occurs in approximately 10% of all pediatric trauma patients admitted to the hospital, and an aggressive team approach toward treatment of these severely injured patients has improved outcome. The care of injured children has been advanced in every phase of treatment, from field contact to rehabilitation, and although efforts have been directed toward establishing databases, setting treatment protocols, and evaluating outcomes, prevention only has become a priority recently. Differences in death rates between countries suggest that mortality in the United States could be reduced dramatically by improving injury prevention and control. Although morbidity and mortality have been reduced with recent innovations in care of the child with multiple injuries, prevention must be a priority for the future.

Outcome differences in adolescent blunt severe polytrauma patients managed at pediatric versus adult trauma centers.

BACKGROUND Previous research suggests adolescent trauma patients can be managed equally effectively at pediatric and adult trauma centers. We sought to determine whether this association would be upheld for adolescent severe polytrauma patients. We hypothesized that no difference in adjusted outcomes would be observed between pediatric trauma centers (PTCs) and adult trauma centers (ATCs) for t...

Does the applied polytrauma definition notably influence outcome and patient population? – a retrospective analysis

BACKGROUND Although the term "polytrauma" has been in use for decades, no generally accepted definition exists. The aim of this study was to demonstrate that different polytrauma definitions applied to a specific patient population result in diverse subgroups of individuals, who in turn present a varying outcome. METHODS All patients (≥18 years) treated at our level I trauma center within a t...

Reply to the comment of the letter to the editor on the survey on trauma systems in Spain.

First of all, I thank the author of the Letter to the Editor for the comments made. The article referred to is no more and no less than a glimpse of the current situation of polytrauma patient care in Spain, which is not up to par with that of other countries, such as the United States. The ATLS method is likewise applicable to prehospital treatment (PHTLS), with certain nuances, but the method...
